Fire-Safe Landscaping in Cambria, CA

Paso Robles Landscaping builds fire-safe yards for Cambria homes: noncombustible hardscape next to the house, plant swaps, fuel cleanup under the pines, and drip irrigation that keeps what's left green. Cambria's Monterey pine forest is part of what makes the town, and it's also why defensible space matters here. The goal is a yard that slows embers and flames without stripping the forest. Cambria Fire Department's Annual Program

Each year the Cambria Fire Department, part of the Cambria CSD, runs a Fire Hazard Fuel Reduction Program for parcels that need abatement. The 2026 deadline was July 1. The guidelines make a good checklist for any Cambria yard:

  • Cut weeds and annual grasses to 4 inches, without leaving bare soil that erodes.
  • Remove downed trees, rounds and dead limbs within 30 feet of any structure, and remove standing dead trees that threaten buildings.
  • Clear ladder fuels under trees and shrubs, keeping 6 feet of vertical clearance under trees taller than 20 feet.
  • Remove poison oak, broom, pampas grass, jubata grass and crocosmia.
  • Protect seedlings, young native trees and ferns so the forest can regenerate.

Zone 0: The First Five Feet

State law (Public Resources Code 4291) calls for an ember-resistant zone within 5 feet of structures, based on Board of Forestry rules. As of October 16, 2026, the Board's Zone 0 regulations are approved in draft but not yet in effect, and they would apply in State Responsibility Areas and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones in local areas. Check your parcel on the state FHSZ map; the County's guide to the 2025 maps explains what each zone means. Either way, the first five feet is where we start:

  • Pavers, concrete, flagstone or gravel against the walls instead of bark, wood chips and shrubs.
  • Noncombustible steps and landings at doors and decks.
  • A noncombustible section where a wood fence meets the house.
  • Plants moved back from windows, vents and decks.

See our fire-safe landscaping page for the full Zone 0 status and the three defensible space zones.

Trees and Permits

Cambria is in the Coastal Zone, and under County Code 23.05.062 removing a tree generally needs County approval. Exceptions include trunks under 8 inches in diameter at 4 feet above grade and trees in a hazardous condition that the County inspects and approves for removal. Most fire-safety work under the pines is limbing up, clearing ladder fuels and removing dead material, not cutting healthy trees. We check before anything larger comes down.

Zones 1 and 2: Spacing, Not Bare Ground

Out to 30 feet, we space low, well-watered plants with gravel or stone between them, keep pine needles off paths and patios, and move firewood, wood screens and furniture away from the house. Beyond that, out to 100 feet or the property line, the work is fuel reduction: mowing grass, spacing shrubs and limbing trees, following CAL FIRE defensible space guidance. Steep lots get gravel paths that double as firebreaks and access for cleanup.

Water-Wise and Fire-Wise

Cambria's water supply is limited, and the Cambria CSD urges customers to avoid turf. Plants near the house stay greener and harder to ignite when they're on drip with a weather-based controller, so we pair fire-safe design with low-water planting. Winter rain gets a path too: rock swales and drains keep it off the hardscape we add.

Cost depends on lot size, slope, tree work, hauling and how much hardscape goes in. We give you a written estimate after a site visit; see our Cambria hardscape and Cambria landscaping pages.

For parcels in its annual Fire Hazard Fuel Reduction Program, the guidelines call for grasses cut to 4 inches, dead limbs and downed trees removed within 30 feet of structures, ladder fuels cleared, and broom, pampas grass, jubata grass and crocosmia removed. The 2026 deadline was July 1.

Is Zone 0 required in Cambria yet?

Not yet. As of October 16, 2026, the Board of Forestry's Zone 0 regulations are approved in draft but not in effect. They would apply in State Responsibility Areas and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones in local areas. Check your parcel on the state FHSZ map.

Do I need a permit to remove a pine in Cambria?
