Landscaping for Creston Homes and Ranches

Paso Robles Landscaping designs and builds outdoor spaces for homes, ranchettes and horse properties in and around Creston. Out here, a yard is usually part of a bigger piece of land, so we think about shade, wind, wildfire, water from your well and access along with how the patio will look. We build patios and decomposed granite areas, shade structures, decks, fire features, outdoor kitchens, drip irrigation and drought-tolerant planting. Call 805-712-4440 or request a free estimate.

Creston Land and Climate

Creston sits on rolling, oak-dotted country east of Atascadero and southeast of Paso Robles. The Creston District is described as an old plateau at the base of the La Panza Range, roughly 1,000 to 2,000 feet, with old, well-developed terrace and hillside soils from a mix of granitic and sedimentary rock. Summers are hot and dry; winter nights get cold. That leads to a few rules of thumb:

  • Build shade where you live. A pergola, gazebo or patio cover next to the house gets more use than a lawn far from it.
  • Keep irrigated area small and close. Water the outdoor room and a few key beds; let the rest stay native or gravel.
  • Use materials that work at scale. Decomposed granite, gravel and boulders cover big areas for far less water and upkeep than lawn.

Defensible Space Comes First

Many Creston properties are in a State Responsibility Area, where state law requires defensible space up to 100 feet from structures (or to the property line). CAL FIRE's defensible space guide explains the zones: an ember-resistant Zone 0 within five feet of the house, a lean, clean Zone 1 out to 30 feet, and a reduced-fuel Zone 2 out to 100 feet. Check your hazard zone on the State Fire Marshal FHSZ map. We design patios, paths and gravel bands so the area closest to your home is noncombustible, and we leave clear access for fire trucks. Wells, Oaks and Water Programs

Most homes here run on private wells, so we design irrigation to be predictable: drip zones by plant type, a pressure regulator and filter, and a weather-based controller. Parcels over the Paso Robles Groundwater Basin may qualify for the County's Cash for Grass incentive when irrigated lawn is replaced with approved low-water plants; apply before removing anything.

Creston is unincorporated, so the County's Oak Woodland Ordinance applies on rural land: clear-cutting an acre or more of oak woodland needs a permit, and clear-cutting on slopes of 30% or more is prohibited. Permits for structures go through County Planning & Building.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work in Creston?

Yes, on homes, ranchettes and horse properties in and around Creston. Our office is in Paso Robles.

How much defensible space do I need in Creston?

In State Responsibility Areas, state law requires defensible space up to 100 feet from structures or to the property line. CAL FIRE describes Zone 0 (0-5 feet), Zone 1 (to 30 feet) and Zone 2 (to 100 feet).

Can you design irrigation for a well?

Yes. We size drip zones to your well, add filtration and pressure regulation, and use a weather-based controller so water use stays predictable.

Do I need a permit to remove oaks?

On rural land, clear-cutting an acre or more of oak woodland needs a County permit, and clear-cutting on slopes of 30% or more is prohibited. We plan around oaks whenever we can.
