Backyard Remodel in San Luis Obispo, CA
Paso Robles Landscaping plans and builds backyard remodels for San Luis Obispo homes: one coordinated design that can include a patio, shade, outdoor kitchen, fire feature, walls, planting, irrigation, lighting and poolside work. In SLO we design around clay soils, City tree and night-sky rules, and front-yard paving limits when the remodel reaches toward the street. Call 805-712-4440 or request a free estimate.

What a Backyard Remodel Usually Includes
Most SLO remodels are not a single item. They are a sequence that turns a leftover side yard or a steep back pad into a place you actually use:
- Patios and pavers, often with a pergola or patio cover
- Outdoor kitchens, fire pits and dining space
- Retaining walls, steps and drainage on sloping lots
- Planting, drip irrigation, mulch and rock, and sometimes artificial turf
- Landscape lighting planned for the City night-sky code
- Pool decks and poolside landscaping when a pool is part of the plan
We draw one plan so grades, utilities, planting and structure line up, then build it in phases if you want to spread the work out.

City Rules That Shape the Plan
- Front-yard paving. Under Municipal Code 17.76.030, no more than 40% of a residential front yard, and no more than 26 feet of its width, may be covered by concrete or other impervious material. If the remodel wraps to the front, we measure and stay inside that limit, or use permeable options and planting where the numbers are tight.
- Trees. The City regulates tree removal on private property. We keep patio bases, wall footings and utility trenches out of major root zones where we can.
- Lighting. Municipal Code 17.70.100 requires outdoor lighting to aim down and limit light on neighboring property. Soft, shielded fixtures fit dinner and path use without glare.
- Water. The City does not currently offer a turf rebate; it does offer smart-controller discounts. Lawn-to-planting or patio projects here are usually about water savings and less upkeep rather than a rebate.
- Permits. Gas, electrical, plumbing, patio covers and taller retaining walls generally need City permits. We confirm the list with Building Safety before construction.

Slopes, Clay and Neighborhoods
Around Bishop Peak, Foothill and Laguna Lake, the remodel often starts with walls and drainage so a patio can sit level. On flatter Downtown and mid-town lots, the job is more about circulation, privacy and fitting a kitchen or fire feature into a smaller footprint. In Avila Ranch, San Luis Ranch and similar neighborhoods, HOA review can set materials and plant lists, and we prepare the package for that review.
Clay soil means every patio and wall needs a compacted, free-draining base and a clear path for winter water. We slope hard surfaces away from the house and give runoff somewhere to go, such as a gravel strip, drain or planted area.

How a Remodel Job Runs
- Site visit to talk through how you use the yard, sun, privacy and budget
- A plan that shows grades, structures, planting, irrigation and lighting together
- Permit coordination for the pieces that need it
- Construction by our crew, with a walk-through at the end
Cost depends on how many pieces you include, access, soil work, materials and permit scope. We give a written estimate after a site visit. Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in a backyard remodel?
Whatever your yard needs as one plan: patio or pavers, shade, outdoor kitchen, fire feature, walls, planting, irrigation, lighting and poolside work. We design them together so grades and utilities line up.
Do I need permits for a backyard remodel in SLO?
Often yes for gas, electrical, plumbing, patio covers and taller retaining walls. We confirm the list with City Building Safety at the design stage.
Can you remodel around existing trees?
Yes. The City regulates tree removal, so we keep bases, footings and trenches out of major root zones where we can and design the layout around trees worth keeping.
Do you build pools as part of a remodel?
We don't build the pool itself. We refer three pool builders we've completed whole-yard projects with, and the pool is built under a separate contract with that pool builder. We do the master design, coordinate the schedule, and build the deck, concrete and landscape around it. See our pool page for how a pool fits into a full backyard plan.
How much does a backyard remodel cost in San Luis Obispo?
It depends on scope, materials, access, soil work and permits. We give a free written estimate after a site visit.
