Outdoor Kitchens in Paso Robles, CA

Paso Robles Landscaping designs and builds outdoor kitchens for homes inside the City of Paso Robles: grill islands, bar counters, sinks, refrigerators and wine fridges, pizza ovens, shade covers and the patio around them. Our office is on Riverside Avenue, and this page is about city lots, from older neighborhoods near downtown to newer subdivisions. For unincorporated west-side and east-side acreage, County rules apply instead; see our outdoor living in Paso Robles wine country page. Call 805-712-4440 or request a free estimate.

Shade First: Built for Paso Robles Summers

Summer afternoons in Paso Robles are hot, and a grill adds its own heat. The kitchens that get used are the ones in shade. We look at where the late-day sun hits your yard, set the cook station on the shaded side of the house or under a solid patio cover, and keep clear space and venting above the grill. Light-colored counters and pavers stay cooler to the touch. Nights cool off quickly, so many clients add heaters, a fire feature and low lighting so dinner can run late.

City Permits for Outdoor Kitchens

Inside city limits, the City Building Division handles permits and inspections, and applications go through the PasoPermits portal. The Building Division phone is 805-237-3850.

  • Gas, power and plumbing. A new gas line, new outdoor circuits or a sink with a supply and drain each need permits and inspections. A freestanding grill on a portable propane tank usually does not.
  • Patio covers. The City's Building FAQ says a patio cover needs a permit unless it is at least 10 feet from the structure and less than 120 square feet. Either way, setbacks and zoning still apply; the Planning Division is at 805-237-3970.
  • County rules. County of San Luis Obispo exemptions, such as the County Ord. 3560 deck exemption, apply in unincorporated areas, not inside the City of Paso Robles.

We confirm what your project needs at the design stage, prepare the drawings and build to pass inspection.

Oaks, Fire Zones and City Lots

  • Oaks. Under the City's Oak Tree Preservation regulations, removing an oak 6 inches or more in diameter needs a permit, and the Critical Root Zone is protected. We route gas and electrical trenches around root zones and keep grills and hoods clear of low limbs.
  • Fire zones. The City's FHSZ FAQ notes High and Moderate zones inside city limits. We use noncombustible islands and counters and keep bark mulch away from the cook station; see fire-safe landscaping.
  • Smaller yards. Older city lots often have tight side yards and alley access. We plan how block, counters and appliances get to the back yard, and keep the kitchen compact so the yard still has room for planting and a table.

Kitchens Made for Hosting

Many Paso Robles clients cook for friends and family more than for two. A bar counter facing the yard, a wine fridge and an ice bin keep guests out of the cooking zone. A pizza oven or a side burner adds range. We leave counter space on both sides of the grill and a clear walkway behind the cook, and we place the sink between the grill and the refrigerator. Islands are built on block cores with stucco or stone veneer, with sealed stone or concrete counters and doors and drawers made for outdoor use.

Part of a Bigger Plan

Kitchens usually go with a patio, shade and planting; see hardscape in Paso Robles and deck building in Paso Robles. If a pool is part of the plan, we do the master design for the whole backyard and refer you to pool builders we have done whole-yard projects with. You sign a separate contract with the pool builder, and we coordinate the schedule and build everything around the pool: decks, patios, walls, lighting, kitchen and planting. See pool projects in Paso Robles.

Cost depends on size, layout, appliances, utility runs, the cover and finishes. We give you a written estimate after a site visit; see our outdoor kitchen construction and Paso Robles landscaping pages.
