Landscaping in Los Ranchos and the Edna Valley

Paso Robles Landscaping designs and builds yards in Los Ranchos and the Edna Valley, the unincorporated area southeast of the City of San Luis Obispo along Highway 227. Homes here range from established neighborhoods to larger lots next to vineyards and open hills. We build patios and pavers, covered outdoor rooms, fire features, raised beds, retaining walls, drip irrigation and low-water planting. Call 805-712-4440 or request a free estimate.

Water: Know Your Source

The County's Los Ranchos/Edna Village Plan explains that the village area gets water through a central system, while developed parcels in the rest of the area use individual wells or one of two small mutual water companies. Today Golden State Water Company runs an Edna Road system that delivers treated groundwater pumped from the Edna Valley Groundwater Basin. The plan also notes that the San Luis Obispo Creek basin underlies the northwest end of the valley and the Pismo Creek basin the southeastern three-fourths. Either way, the water comes from local groundwater, so we design yards that look good on little irrigation:

  • Drip by zone: trees, shrubs and beds on separate drip zones, run by a weather-based controller.
  • Well-friendly systems: filtration, pressure regulation and zones sized to your well's flow.
  • Less lawn: a small lawn or artificial turf where you'll use it, with gravel, decomposed granite and planting beyond.

The County's Cash for Grass program doesn't cover this area; ask your water provider what it offers.

Designing for the Valley

The Edna Valley opens toward the coast, so mornings are often foggy and afternoons breezy, with warmer, sunnier spots on the slopes. A covered patio or pergola on the sheltered side of the house, a fire feature for cool evenings, and raised beds for the vegetable garden are common requests. On slopes we use retaining walls, steps and drainage to make level space without sending water toward the house.

Permits, Oaks and Fire Safety

Los Ranchos and the Edna Valley are unincorporated, so building permits go through County Planning & Building; addresses inside San Luis Obispo city limits go through the City instead. On rural land outside village limits, the County's Oak Woodland Ordinance requires a permit to clear-cut an acre or more of oak woodland. Hillside and grassland parcels can carry fire risk; check your address on the State Fire Marshal's FHSZ map and see fire-safe landscaping.
