Pool Decks and Pool Surrounds in Arroyo Grande, CA
Paso Robles Landscaping designs and builds pool decks and everything around an Arroyo Grande pool: the deck, steps and walls, the pool barrier fence and gates, shade, lighting, outdoor kitchen and planting. We don't build pools. We do the master design for the whole backyard and refer you to pool builders we have done whole-yard projects with. You sign a separate contract with the pool builder for the pool itself, and we coordinate the schedule and build the rest. Call 805-712-4440 or request a free estimate.

Where the Pool Ends and the Yard Begins
The pool builder handles the shell, plumbing, equipment and the parts of the edge in their contract. We plan the deck so it meets that edge cleanly: matching heights, drain locations and joint lines, and a deck that slopes away from the water and away from the house. Because we draw the master plan first, the pool builder and our crew work from the same layout, and the deck, walls and planting are ready to start when the pool work is done.

Deck Materials for Mild Coastal Weather
- Cooler surfaces. Light-colored pavers, natural stone or textured concrete finishes stay comfortable underfoot and handle salt air better when sealed.
- Grip. Textured, slip-resistant finishes around the water and on steps, important when fog and morning dew keep surfaces damp.
- Drainage. Deck drains or slot drains where splash and rain collect, so water doesn't sit against the house or the pool edge.
- Shade and wind. A pergola or patio cover at one end of the deck makes summer afternoons and breezy evenings usable. The City's patio cover standards set framing, connections, footing sizes and a minimum 6 feet 8 inches of headroom.

Pool Barriers and City Rules
California's Swimming Pool Safety Act requires a new or remodeled pool or spa at a single-family home to have at least two of seven drowning prevention features when a building permit is issued. Options include an enclosure that separates the pool from the house, removable mesh fencing with a self-closing, self-latching gate, a safety pool cover, exit alarms, and self-closing, self-latching devices on doors to the pool. Under Section 115923, an enclosure must be at least 60 inches tall with no more than 2 inches of clearance at the bottom, have no gaps a 4-inch sphere can pass through, and have gates that open away from the pool and self-close and self-latch with the latch at least 60 inches up.
The City's pool and spa requirements add local options: a 5-foot non-climbable fence around the pool, a fence between the house and the pool with walls or fences along the property lines, or rear fencing combined with door alarms. We build the fence and gates to those numbers and work with the pool builder on the other features. Inside city limits, the Building Division issues the pool permit (any pool or spa deeper than 24 inches, including prefabricated pools over 5,000 gallons) and inspects the work.

Around the Deck
- A gas fire pit or fire table off the deck
- An outdoor kitchen with a view of the water
- Low-water planting on drip, set back so leaves and mulch stay out of the pool
- Step and path lighting for evenings
Lots in the hills above town and toward the Edna Valley often need a level terrace first; see retaining walls in Arroyo Grande. Village homes and many HOA neighborhoods need architectural approval; we prepare drawings for both. Our Arroyo Grande pool projects page covers City pool setbacks and the full referral process.
Cost depends on deck size, material, drains, walls, fencing, shade and access. We give you a written estimate for our part after a site visit; the pool builder prices the pool separately. See our Arroyo Grande outdoor living and pool projects pages.
