Pool Decks and Pool Surrounds in Templeton, CA

Paso Robles Landscaping designs and builds pool decks and everything around a Templeton pool: the deck, steps and walls, the pool barrier fence and gates, shade, lighting, outdoor kitchen and planting. We don't build pools. We do the master design for the whole backyard and refer you to pool builders we have done whole-yard projects with. You sign a separate contract with the pool builder for the pool itself, and we coordinate the schedule and build the rest. Call 805-712-4440 or request a free estimate.

Where the Pool Ends and the Yard Begins

The pool builder handles the shell, plumbing, equipment and the parts of the edge in their contract. We plan the deck so it meets that edge cleanly: matching heights, drain locations and joint lines, and a deck that slopes away from the water and away from the house. Because we draw the master plan first, the pool builder and our crew work from the same layout, and the deck, walls and planting are ready to start when the pool work is done.

Deck Materials for Templeton Heat

  • Cooler surfaces. Templeton summers are hot, so we steer toward light-colored pavers, natural stone or textured concrete finishes that stay cooler underfoot than dark materials.
  • Grip. Textured, slip-resistant finishes around the water and on steps.
  • Drainage. Deck drains or slot drains where splash and rain collect, so water doesn't sit against the house or the pool edge.
  • Shade. A pergola or patio cover at one end of the deck makes the area usable on summer afternoons.

Pool Barriers and Gates

California's Swimming Pool Safety Act requires a new or remodeled pool or spa at a single-family home to have at least two of seven drowning prevention features when a building permit is issued. Options include an enclosure that separates the pool from the house, removable mesh fencing with a self-closing, self-latching gate, a safety pool cover, exit alarms, and self-closing, self-latching devices on doors to the pool. Under Section 115923, an enclosure must be at least 60 inches tall with no more than 2 inches of clearance at the bottom, have no gaps a 4-inch sphere can pass through, and have gates that open away from the pool and self-close and self-latch with the latch at least 60 inches up. We build the fence and gates to those numbers and work with the pool builder on the other features.

Templeton Lots: Oaks, Slopes and Septic

Templeton is unincorporated, so County Planning & Building handles permits. Many lots have native oaks, so we keep deck footings and trenches out of root zones where we can. Sloped lots often need a retaining wall or raised edge, and the deck layout has to respect the septic tank and leach field. Our Templeton pool projects page covers County pool setbacks and the Templeton CSD rules for draining pool water.

Around the Deck

  • A gas fire pit or fire table off the deck
  • An outdoor kitchen with a view of the water
  • Low-water planting on drip, set back so leaves and mulch stay out of the pool
  • Step and path lighting for evenings

Cost depends on deck size, material, drains, walls, fencing, shade and access. We give you a written estimate for our part after a site visit; the pool builder prices the pool separately. See our Templeton hardscape and pool projects pages.
